Inspired by domestic interiors, I explore wallpaper patterns to create relief sculptures. My work is an intensive process and I begin with carving the wallpaper pattern into plaster to create the master mould.
The works presented here are made from lead and cement. Although these materials are recognized for their industrial strength and durable properties, they are also vulnerable to weakness. During the process, the materials are cut, rolled, poured, mixed, smoothed and hammered, leaving them delicate, fragile and unlike their original robust nature. The damask wallpaper pattern, chosen for its ornate splendour, is a vast contrast to the labour-intensive demands with which lead and cement are typically associated.
My investigations with industrial materials and domesticity juxtapose exterior with interior, permanence with fragility and the manufactured with the handmade.
